It Happened One Night is the eleventh episode of the second season of A Different World. The episode opens with Denise having a terrible nightmare about a Calculus exam, causing her to wake up in a panic. She heads to the cafeteria in the middle of the night to get some food and runs into Dwayne, who is also there late.
Dwayne and Denise start talking about their worries, and Denise mentions her fear of failing her Calculus exam. Dwayne offers to help her study, and they spend the rest of the night working on Calculus problems together. As they work, they start to open up to each other about their feelings, and a sense of closeness develops between them.
Meanwhile, Whitley is preparing for a big date with a new guy, and she's really excited about it. She's gotten a new outfit and has arranged for a fancy dinner and a limousine. However, she starts to get nervous when she realizes that the guy is running late, and she starts to worry that he might not show up at all.
As the night wears on, Whitley becomes increasingly worried and frustrated, and she starts to lash out at her friends. She accuses them of not taking her concerns seriously and not supporting her. Kim and Jaleesa try to help her by soothing her nerves and keeping her busy, but Whitley is too worked up to listen to reason.
Finally, the guy shows up, and he and Whitley have a nice time together. However, the night is soured by Whitley's outburst, and she's left feeling embarrassed and ashamed. Denise and Dwayne continue to work on Calculus together, and they start to get closer and closer. As the night wears on, they start to realize that they might have feelings for each other, and Denise starts to worry about what this might mean for their friendship.
The episode ends with Dwayne and Denise saying goodnight to each other, still unsure about whether or not to take things further. Whitley apologizes to her friends for her behavior, and they reassure her that they still care about her. The episode concludes with the characters facing their fears and their insecurities, each growing a little bit stronger and closer as a result.
