The Gift of the Magi is the tenth episode of the first season of A Different World. In this episode, the holiday season is in full swing on the campus of Hillman College. The episode centers around the main characters struggling to find the perfect gift for their loved ones.

Whitley, a resident fashion expert, is on a mission to find the perfect gift for her boyfriend, Julian. However, she soon discovers that her tastes are far too expensive for her budget. After some hesitation, Whitley decides to sell her prized possession, a special bracelet that was passed down to her from her grandmother, to buy Julian an expensive watch he has always wanted.

Meanwhile, Denise is struggling with her own gift-giving dilemmas. She wants to find the perfect gift for her long-distance boyfriend, Chip, but she's not sure what to get. Through a series of mishaps and miscommunications, Denise ends up accidentally donating all of her clothes to charity instead of the clothes she intended to donate. Left with only a few items of clothing, Denise decides to use the money she saved on gifts to buy herself a new wardrobe.

Elsewhere, Ron is desperate to find the perfect gift for his crush, Freddie. However, Freddie is on her own mission to find the perfect present for her boyfriend. Ron struggles with his feelings for Freddie and eventually decides to put aside his desires in order to support her and her relationship.

Throughout the episode, everyone on campus is excitedly preparing for the annual holiday talent show. Students and faculty members alike are rehearsing their acts and preparing to show off their talents. However, tensions rise when it becomes clear that the show's director, Mr. Gaines, is looking to cut one of the acts. Everyone bands together to try to save the show, and in the end, they come up with a plan to ensure that every act gets a chance to perform.

The Gift of the Magi is ultimately a heartwarming episode about the spirit of giving and the importance of coming together as a community. It touches on themes of sacrifice, forgiveness, and unconditional love. The characters all learn important lessons about themselves and each other over the course of the episode, and their growth and development leave viewers feeling inspired and uplifted. As Christmas approaches, the Hillman College community is reminded that sometimes the greatest gifts come not from material possessions, but from the love and support of those closest to us.
