Reconcilable Differences is the first episode of A Different World, a spin-off of The Cosby Show. The show follows the story of Denise Huxtable, the second eldest daughter of the Huxtable family, as she goes to Hillman College, a historically black college in Virginia.

The episode begins with Denise arriving at Hillman College, excited to start a new chapter in her life. She meets her roommate, Jaleesa, who seems to have a bit of an attitude towards her. Denise also meets her resident advisor, Stevie, who warns her about the challenges of college life, including the workload and the temptations of partying and dating.

Denise tries to explore the campus and find her classes, but quickly realizes that the college is much larger than she thought. She gets lost and ends up in a protest against the school's decision to have a Ronald Reagan fundraiser on campus. Denise is sympathetic to the protesters' cause, but she also sympathizes with the school's administration, who are trying to raise funds for the college.

Meanwhile, Denise's father, Cliff Huxtable, is worried about his daughter being so far away from home. He and his wife, Clair, discuss how they can keep in touch with Denise and make sure she is okay. They decide to write her a letter every day and send her care packages.

Back at Hillman College, Denise meets a handsome student named Dwayne Wayne who becomes smitten with her. He is charming and funny, but Denise is more interested in studying and getting good grades. Still, she can't deny their chemistry.

The episode ends with Denise, Jaleesa, and Dwayne sitting outside, talking about their differences and trying to find common ground. They all come from different backgrounds and have different experiences, but they realize that they all have something to learn from each other.

Overall, Reconcilable Differences sets the stage for the rest of the series, showcasing the challenges and opportunities that come with college life and introducing the main characters. It also addresses important social issues, such as politics and activism, that would become recurring themes throughout the show.
