A streak that will never be challenged ended in January, 1974. The Notre Dame Fighting Irish basketball team defeated the UCLA Bruins by a single point. The ESPN documentary "88 and 1" outlines the game that ended UCLA's 88 game winning streak, that surprisingly ended on the campus of South Bend, Indiana. Everything was going according to plan for UCLA. There were just two minutes remaining in the game, yet uncharacteristically they lost the game, when Notre Dame finished with a 12 to zero run.
This should not have happened to Coach John Wooden, the legendary UCLA basketball coach. Coach Wooden's record speaks for itself, including eight out of nine national basketball championships from 1966 through 1975. Wooden's record in this time frame was 259 wins, and just 12 losses. Yet, Notre Dame coach Digger Phelps will point out to this day, that his number two ranked team expected to win. He even went so far as to have his team practice cutting down the basketball nets, brashly predicting to knock off UCLA. Phelps was confident, and the confidence was passed down to his team.
