The episode begins with Sally (played by Kristen Johnston) getting a job as a waitress at a diner. However, her attention is soon diverted when a handsome man named Jeff (guest star Michael Vartan) walks in. Sally falls head over heels in love with him and can't stop thinking about him. However, she soon discovers that another woman, Karen (guest star Sarah Lancaster), is also interested in Jeff.
Meanwhile, Dick (played by John Lithgow) and Mary (played by Jane Curtin) are having problems of their own. They haven't been intimate in a while, and Mary is worried that Dick is losing interest in her. When she confronts him about it, he reveals that he doesn't know how to express his feelings and emotions because he's an alien. Mary is understanding and tries to help him by giving him advice on how to be more attentive and affectionate.
Back at the diner, Sally decides to ask Jeff out on a date. However, Karen overhears their conversation and invites herself along, turning the date into a group outing. Sally is upset but tries to keep her cool. During the date, Sally and Karen compete for Jeff's attention, leading to a disastrous end to the evening.
Meanwhile, Harry (played by French Stewart) is having his own issues with human relationships. He's been seeing a woman named Vicki (guest star Ana Gasteyer) and is afraid of getting too close to her. He's also worried that his true identity as an alien will be revealed to her. When he finally tells Vicki the truth, she's surprisingly understanding and tells him that she likes him for who he is, no matter where he comes from.
As the episode comes to a close, the Solomons come to realize that human emotions and relationships are complex and often difficult to understand.
