One of the Family is the fifth episode of the 16th season of the UK medical documentary series 24 Hours In A&E. The show follows the day-to-day operations of the staff and patients at King's College Hospital's Accident and Emergency department in London.
This episode focuses on the stories of several patients who come into the department for different reasons. One patient, a young woman, is brought in after being hit by a car while cycling. The team works quickly to assess her injuries, which include a broken arm and leg. As they administer pain relief and prepare her for surgery, the patient's mother arrives, visibly upset.
Another patient, an elderly man, is brought in with chest pains. The staff quickly suspect a heart attack and work to stabilize the man and conduct tests to determine the cause of his condition. As they do so, his wife arrives at the hospital to support him.
The episode also follows the story of a young girl who has ingested a coin and requires treatment to ensure it does not cause any blockages or damage to her digestive system. The staff are careful to ensure that she is comfortable and calm throughout the process.
Finally, the episode features the story of a man who has been brought in after a motorcycle accident. The team works to assess and treat his injuries, which include broken ribs and a punctured lung. As they do so, they speak to the patient about the potential long-term effects of his injuries and the importance of taking care of himself during his recovery.
Throughout the episode, the stories of the patients and their loved ones intertwine, highlighting the importance of community and the role of the hospital staff in providing support during difficult times. As always, the staff members of the A&E department demonstrate their dedication, skill, and empathy as they work to provide the best possible care for their patients.
