In season 16 episode 3 of 24 Hours In A&E titled "Live and Learn", the viewers get a glimpse into the busy emergency department of St. George's Hospital in London, England. The episode follows the stories of five different patients and their experiences in the emergency room.
The first patient we meet is 16-year-old Lauren, who was in a car accident while on her way to her first day of college. She was hit by a car while riding her bike and suffered severe injuries to her head, neck, and spine. As the medical staff works to stabilize her, her parents anxiously await news on her condition. The doctors must act fast to determine the extent of her injuries and provide lifesaving treatment.
The second patient is 72-year-old Tony, who has been rushed to the emergency room by his son after experiencing chest pains. Tony has a history of heart disease and in the past has had a stent fitted in his heart. The medical team must quickly assess Tony's condition and determine the best course of action to prevent a potentially life-threatening heart attack.
The third patient is 48-year-old Lesley, who has come to the hospital after experiencing severe headaches and vision problems. The doctors suspect that she has a brain tumor and she is rushed for further testing and scans. Her husband, who has been by her side throughout the entire ordeal, fears the worst.
The fourth patient is 32-year-old Nick, who has been brought into the emergency room after falling from a ladder while working on a construction site. Nick is in a great deal of pain and the doctors must act quickly to diagnose his injuries, which include a possible spinal cord injury.
The episode concludes with the story of 23-year-old Finn, who has been brought into the hospital after collapsing in the street. Finn has a history of using drugs and the medical team must quickly determine the cause of his collapse and provide treatment.
Throughout the episode, we see the incredible dedication and hard work of the healthcare professionals who work in the emergency department. The doctors, nurses, and support staff work tirelessly to provide life-saving care to the patients who come through their doors. "Live and Learn" is a powerful episode that highlights the important work that is done in emergency departments around the world.
