Ep 10. And the No New Friends

Max and Caroline have to deal with a dilemma of making new friends in season 5 episode 10 of 2 Broke Girls, titled And the No New Friends. The story is set in the Brooklyn location Diner and revolves around these two ladies who are always in search of ways to make more money, whilst never giving up on their dreams.

The story starts off with Han giving the waitresses the good news about his engagement. However, they soon realize that he has been hiding his fiancé from everyone, including his main help, Earl. This leads the girls to question why he did not invite them to meet her and, in turn, makes them feel left out and dissonant.

As always, Max and Caroline use this as an opportunity to make money. Their plan is to raise funds for Han’s engagement party and, in doing so, become Han’s best friends, thereby gaining an invitation to meet his fiancé.

The girls eventually decide to organize a “21st birthday” party for Han where they invite all of his friends, even the ones he has not seen or spoken to since second grade. Han’s fiancé, Su-Jin, also arrives, but she is caught in the unusual party which results in a shocked response.

As the party progresses, Caroline and Max notice that Han and Su-Jin do not share the same aspects of humor and culture as they do. In addition, they discover that the couple has been together for a very long time and, therefore, cater more to each other, rather than their separate sets of friends. Han stridently ponders over the situation and comes to the conclusion that friends with a lot of history should not be ignored, even if they do not always have an understanding with one's better half.

At the end of the episode, the girls realize that it is not about making more friends, but, instead, rekindling the old ones and cherishing past connections.

The episode overall follows the show's usual comedic style, expressing the sense of bohemian lifestyle and hardships – such as being broke – that revolve around Max and Caroline’s lives. We see them confront the issues of loneliness and discover the importance of maintaining old friendships while not being overbearing in other people's lives. The episode is well-paced and reveals the characters' growth as well as their continuing attempts to improve their status in life and their unbreakable bond with each other.
