Max and Caroline try to make a homemade cupcake business a success. They begin the episode in the midst of a serious fight, with Max throwing Caroline's clothes out of the apartment in a fit of rage. The root cause of the argument is the fact that Caroline spent all of the money they made from their first day of cupcake sales on a new stove and mixer instead of paying their rent.
The fight takes a backseat when they realize they need to come up with a new business plan, as their cupcake truck has been impounded. They decide to try to get into high-end catering and put their skills to the test by preparing cupcakes for a bar mitzvah.
Their first potential client is a woman named Sophie who is a regular at the diner where Max and Caroline work. Though they initially think she is not interested in their cupcakes, they later discover that Sophie is actually a wealthy socialite who is willing to pay them $500 for a dozen cupcakes.
Meanwhile, Max has to deal with a particularly difficult customer at the diner who, after receiving poor service from her, loudly announces that she will never return. Max blows up at the woman, causing the customer to write a negative review online which could hurt the diner's business.
Max and Caroline manage to prepare the cupcakes for the bar mitzvah, but they run into trouble when their van breaks down. Desperate, they try to hail a cab but can only afford to take it if they share it with a group of unemployed men. Once they arrive at the party, they discover that they have brought the wrong cupcakes and have to race back to the diner to make it right.
The episode ends with Max and Caroline reconciling and agreeing to work together to make their cupcake business a success. They toast to their partnership with their very own cupcake creation: the "Maxoline," a cupcake with Max's signature chocolate buttercream and Caroline's signature raspberry filling.
Overall, "And the Break-up Scene" is a lively and entertaining episode that sets up much of the dynamic that will be present throughout the entirety of the series. The humor is raunchy and irreverent, and the plot is farcical but enjoyable. Fans of the show will appreciate the levity and wit of the script, as well as the charming performances of its two lead actresses, Kat Dennings and Beth Behrs.
