Zombies Aren't Dead: Marvel/George A. Romero Comic 'Empire of the Dead' Headed to TV
by Andy Neuenschwander
The disease is spreading. They're coming for you, and there's no escape, no matter what you do. Soon they will overrun us all, and they will be the only things left in this world.
We're talking, of course, about zombie TV shows.
"The Walking Dead" started a bit of a zombie renaissance in television and movies, showing with its massive ratings successes that zombies and the horror genre in general can be valid television powerhouses. Now, in 2015, we have "The Walking Dead," the upcoming spin-off "Fear The Walking Dead," and the zombie comedy procedural "iZombie" on the CW, just to name a few zombie projects.
Now another one is going into development: "Empire of the Dead" is being developed for television by Demarest, the company that produced "A Most Wanted Man" and Kevin Smith's "Tusk." The zombie show will be based on the Marvel comic of the same title..."The Walking Dead" and "iZombie" are also both based on comic books.
What "Empire of the Dead" has going for it is that George A. Romero, creator of "Dawn of the Dead" and the father of the zombie genre, wrote the comic book. That should give the project cred with hardcore genre fans and help market it even to those who might be tired of the zombie fad.
