'Zombieland' TV Series Coming to Fox: Thank 'The Walking Dead?'

Zombieland.jpg" style="margin-left: 5px; margin-right: 5px; margin-top: 5px; margin-bottom: 5px; float: left; width: 300px; height: 200px; " />With the season 2 premiere of "The Walking Dead" setting cable ratings records, it was only a matter of time before more zombie shows got the green light. But TV works fast, so in this case "a matter of time" meant about 24 hours.

Yesterday, it was announced that a TV series based on the movie "Zombieland" would be going ahead at Fox. It's an interesting move for a number of reasons, not least of which is the incredible popularity of zombies in pop culture at the moment: "The Walking Dead" is an obvious influence, and "World War Z" should only feed the zombie frenzy.

But this is interesting also because of the origins of "Zombieland."

As Collider notes, the creators of the movie originally intended for "Zombieland" to be a TV show, hence the "zombie kill of the week" gag: "If you watch the movie with that in mind, you will see some remnants of the television show," noted co-creator Rhett Reese. "We have the ‘Zombie Kill of the Week,’ which was always intended to happen every week."

So it sounds like the story will already be primed for the episodic style. This could be a lot of fun, though I have my doubts about how much gore a network like Fox is going to be willing to show... you can get away with a little more on AMC. Additionally, the cast will have some big shoes to fill left by Jesse Eisenberg and Emma Stone, who have gone on to become big stars, and Woody Harrelson, who was extra hilarious in the movie.

And then there's the matter of what may very well be the coolest cameo in any movie in recent history. If you haven't yet seen the movie, we won't spoil it for you, but suffice it to say, Fox is going to have a real challenge trying to replicate the movie's biggest surprise on the small screen every week.
