YouTube Producer Films Breathtaking Live-Action 'Assassin's Creed' Parkour Sequence
by Sean ComerHey, Sony and Ubisoft? This clip from YouTube maven devinsupertramp just dried up several excuses you could've had for your "Assassin's Creed" movie starring Michael Fassbender sucking a meat missile.
The producer's real name is Devin Graham, and he's a visually accomplished filmmaker whose videos notoriously tell gripping stories with music and movement. He's worked closely in the last year or so making videos for up-and-coming "hip-hop" violinist and former "America's Got Talent" contestant Lindsey Stirling, including the scenic epic video for Stirling's medley of Nintendo's "The Legend of Zelda" scores and the mesmerizing black-and-white, Lindsey-versus-her-shadow clip for "Shadows."
Most recently, he took to city streets, dressed an expert in the free-running art of Parkour up in the signature garb of the "Assassin's Creed" video game protagonists, and let him his friend demonstrate just how amazing the game's signature movements can look when filmed authentically. In telling the story of four generations of hooded assassins, the four (soon to be "five" with "Assassin's Creed III" due this fall) games are known for their heroes' agile, breathtaking leaps up walls and across rooftops.
Well, this proves that the action is very, very filmable. Graham even admirably approximates the haunting score of the games and the faceless, behind-the-back and over-the-should camera angles that rarely let us fully glimpse the assassin's face. Best of all, if this is any indication, there are few excuses for abusing CGI to replicate much of the free-run action. Authentic, practical effects are often better than distracting rendering, so here's hoping this proves an inspiration to Sony and Ubisoft to do things the old fashioned way.
