You Can Watch 'The Interview' on Netflix Starting This Saturday
by Andy Neuenschwander
If you wanted to watch "The Interview" but didn't want to pay for it, your chance to see it is coming soon...if you're a Netflix subscriber.
"We are thrilled to offer exclusively the controversial comedy, The Interview, to our US and Canadian members beginning this Saturday, Jan. 24 — just 30 days after it debuted in theaters and pay-per-view," wrote Netflix CEO Reed Hastings in a letter to shareholders.
That's obviously a quick turnaround from "theatrical release" (which in this case was very small) to Netflix, since the service often has to wait for movies to end their runs in theaters and on pay VOD before they can stream them to subscribers.
However, "The Interview" isn't likely to make a lot of money via VOD from here on in. As we previously reported, the movie's sales have slowed down and it looks to end up grossing about $7 million in theaters and somewhere between $30 million and $40 million on VOD, and will lose Sony roughly $30 million, not counting costs from the supposedly "Interview"-fueled Sony hack which include class-action lawsuits from former employees.
The deal with Netflix might earn the movie some extra cash, especially if it is being offered exclusively on the streaming service as Hastings indicated in his letter.
So if you're hoping to see what all the fuss is about, "The Interview" should be on your Netflix queue starting this Saturday.
