Yidio Movie Review: 'Warm Bodies'

The traditional romantic comedy took an infected bite to the wrist to produce, apparently the new trend, the “Supernatural Rom Com…”

Twilight” might have been the biggest as of late, but let’s not think they set the concept. Hapless women have been falling for ghosts, vampires, werewolves, and just your standard beast for as long as movies have been luring us to theaters. The buzz over sparkly vampires just made the box office a more friendly place for these odd romances.

But zombies? Come on.

I was entirely skeptical when a friend told me they were adapting a novel (by Isaac Marion) about a zombie that falls in love. And yet, when the trailer hit… I was surprisingly intrigued. Could they make this work?

The film, which opened Friday, has already brought in $19.5 million, making it tops at the box office. However “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters,” is bumped down to second, and word from anyone who was unfortunate enough to purchase a ticket to that one is why? WHY?

So how does “Warm Bodies” stand up?

While many of the best scenes, as usual, were played in the trailer, there was still a lot of humor and heart in “Warm Bodies.” Certain parts were glossed over that should have gotten more attention—he did eat her boyfriend’s brains, after all, and somehow managed to transport them with him? Can she work through that a little bit more?

Other scenes seemed just repetitive—quit running away, Julie—but if you go into it expecting a movie that can make fun of itself and keep you interested, you won’t be disappointed.

Just try to remember that it’s a movie about zombies who bring themselves back to life with human love, and refrain from nitpicking about technicalities.

Like, why does Rob Corddry’s zombie character catch onto language so much faster than everyone else, yet retain his “zombie fingers” when our hero is all pretty again…??

Don’t think about it. Just let it happen.

A fun thing to keep in mind when watching is that the book was based on “Romeo and Juliet.” It might make a certain balcony scene seem a bit more tongue-in-cheek.

Verdict: No knowledge of how it compares to the book, but it’s a date night that should keep everyone pretty happy. Fun, cute, action... nice and light on all counts. Not overly scary for youngsters, but in possession of a word or two that might stick in their head.
