Yes, There Will Be TWO 'Beauty and the Beast' TV Shows This Year
by Andy NeuenschwanderWith the recent "Beastly" and the re-release of Disney's "Beauty and the Beast" in 3D, have you had enough of the story yet? ABC and The CW are hoping not.
ABC just ordered a new adaptation of the classic fairy tale to pilot, despite the fact that The CW is planning a "Beauty and the Beast" pilot as well. The two networks will likely differ in their approach to the story: The CW's take is a modernized version, while all indications seem to say that ABC's series will be more of a period piece in the fairy tale style.
Still, will there be room for both shows? ABC hit a gold mine with "Once Upon a Time," which has done very well for the network, so it makes sense that they would move forward with more fairy tale content. But an oversaturation of the entertainment market with fairy tale fare could be imminent, what with both "Beauty and the Beast" shows going to pilot and two "Snow White" films hitting theaters this year.
Of course, these are just pilot orders, so the networks both have to decide whether or not the shows are worth ordering to series later in the year. If they both are, though, get ready for yet another fairy tale feud like the one we're seeing between "Snow White and the Huntsman" and "Mirror Mirror."
