'X-Men' Spinoff Announced with 'Fault In Our Stars' Director At Helm
by Andy Neuenschwander
There's a new "X-Men" movie in the works, but simply based on the choice of director, you can tell this one is going to be a little different.
Fox has slated "New Mutants," the first major spin-off of the "X-Men" movie franchise, to go into development right away. It's fitting that this is the first movie in the franchise to deviate from the main characters as "New Mutants" was also the first spin-off from the comic books back in the 1980s.
The movie will have Josh Boone at the helm, who recently directed the movie adaptation of the teen novel sensation "The Fault in Our Stars." This will only be Boone's fourth major feature film credit, with all three preceding ones being emotional dramas aimed at teens.
That may give you an idea of how different "New Mutants" will be from the rest of the "X-Men" franchise, potentially focusing more on relationships and inner turmoil than big action set-pieces.
The project will also be an excellent opportunity for a diverse cast, as the original New Mutants consisted of members with ethnic backgrounds from all over the world. There was Sunspot from Brazil, Wolfsbane from Scotland, Karma from Vietnam, the Native American Mirage, and Cannonball, a boy from Kentucky.
Boone will develop the project along with writer Knate Gwaltney, who most recently wrote and directed the upcoming indie film "Cardboard Boxer" with Thomas Haden Church and Terrance Howard.
