X-Men: Apocalypse Scores Big International Opening

In the United States, Captain America: Civil War is the superhero movie currently in the spotlight, but abroad the past weekend belonged to X-Men: Apocalypse. The latest installment in 20th Century Fox's mutant superhero franchise debuted in dozens of foreign markets a week ahead of its domestic debut, and the movie made its presence felt in all of those markets.

The film, which was directed by Bryan Singer and stars Jennifer Lawrence and James McAvoy, premiered in 75 foreign countries and was the top film at the box office in nearly all of those markets. In total, the film took in about $102 million over the weekend; that's just a touch more than its predecessor, X-Men: Days of Future Past, earned in its international opening. It is, however, far behind the $200 million that Civil War earned during its international opening at the end of April.

The big international numbers look like very good news for the X-Men, though, since Civil War is showing signs of slowing down - it slipped to second place behind The Angry Birds Movie last weekend - and will likely leave plenty of room for Apocalypse to find an audience when it hits North American theaters on May 27.
