Too Close for Comfort: Wyclef Jean Shot in Haiti

Too Close for Comfort: Wyclef Jean Shot in Haiti He didn't catch a bullet in his "Bubblegoose" but one did graze his hand.

Musician Wyclef Jean was treated and released at a hospital in Haiti Sunday after a bullet grazed his right hand. The Haitian-born singer is currently visiting the country to help with the presidential campaign of his friend and fellow musician Michel "Sweet Micky" Martelly.

As Jean stepped out of a vehicle Sunday to make a phone call he told The Associated Press, "I heard blow, blow, blow, and I just looked at my hand."

Reports say that Jean was treated at City Med, a private clinic, in Petionville. He was released from the facility within hours.

Using his newly bandaged right hand, Jean made it to the polls in the Delmas section of Port-au-Prince to cast his presidential ballot, undoubtedly for Martelly.

Last year it looked as though Jean himself would be on the presidential ballot but he was disqualified from the race by Haiti's electoral council because he didn't meet residency requirements.

While police in Haiti are not revealing specifics about the shooting, Haitian police chief Mario Andresol told reporters, "We can't tell you if he was injured by a bullet or something else, he will have to answer to police no matter what."

Assassination attempt or just an instance of being in the wrong place at the wrong time?

A statement released by Rev. Al Sharpton quotes Jimmy Rosemond, a music manager who is with Jean in Haiti, as saying, "It is clear that enemies of progressive change in Haiti are behind the shooting of Wyclef – those that don't want to accept that a monumental change is inevitable for the betterment of the Haitian people."

We share the sentiments of all Jean supporters in saying we are so glad he is OK and hope he will continue to fight for the future of Haiti.
