'World of Warcraft' Now Has Its In-Game Robin Williams Tribute
by Andy NeuenschwanderThe late Robin Williams has already been immortalized on film thanks to his prolific career...but now he's immortalized in a video game as well.
"World of Warcraft" has finished creating an in-game character to honor the memory of Williams, who was himself a huge fan of the online multiplayer game. Of course, the character is a genie!
A Wowhead reader found the Williams tribute character while playing the pre-release beta version of the newest WoW expansion, "Warlords of Draenor." According to the source, if you search an island near Talador you'll find the "Ever-Burning Lamp." Rub that lamp, and Williams' genie character pops out and speaks a few lines before shrinking back into his lamp.
As some have pointed out, the line that Robin speaks is actually slightly different from his line in Aladdin. WoW's Robin says "INFINITE COSMIC POWER, itty-bitty living space" before disappearing, while the line in the Disney movie was "Phenomenal cosmic powers." It is unclear as to whether this was an error or an intentional change to avoid any legal issues with Disney.
Regardless, it's a cute tribute to Williams, who would spend time in the game going into taverns, telling jokes and making other players laugh.
