Who's Star-Lord's Daddy in 'Guardians of the Galaxy?' Not the Guy in the Comics

"Guardians of the Galaxy" was a lot of fun to watch and set up the rest of the Marvel franchise juggernaut nicely. But it also left us with one burning question: Who is Star-Lord's dad?

James Gunn recently talked to Empire about that very subject, and confirmed what many fans have suspected: He's not who fans thought he was going into the movie.

"It’s definitely not the character who it is in the comics, I’ll say that much," Gunn said, ruling out the idea that the movies would follow the Marvel Comics source material and have Peter Quill's dad turn out to be J'son of Spartax.

Those who saw the action flick probably had an idea that J'son wasn't going to be in the picture, due to details about Quill's character that were revealed toward the end of the movie. But this leaves the possibilities wide open for Marvel to choose any being in the galaxy to be Quill's daddy in the movies.

What does this mean for sequels? Well, we know that Quill's sort-of father figure Yondu will likely be making more appearances, especially now that Quill has double-crossed him yet again. But it also means that future Marvel movies could really open up into the cosmic universe.

"Thanos is not the most important thing in 'Guardians 2,' that's for sure," Gunn said, revealing that the team would be dealing with "other threats" instead of (or perhaps in addition to) the Mad Titan.

For now, fans will have plenty of time to theorize about who Star-Lord's father really is. One thing's for sure: He's not very good at being present.
