What's In Theaters This Weekend: Is 'Transformers: Dark of the Moon' Actually Good?

It's Independence Day weekend, which in the movie business means one thing: blockbusters. You'll often find big-ticket movies in theaters over the July 4th weekend...it used to belong to Will Smith, but this year it's all Shia LaBeouf.

"Transformers: Dark of the Moon"

Shia LaBeouf, Josh Duhamel, and a bunch of giant shape-shifting robots are back again for the third installment in the Michael Bay-directed "Transformers" series. One noticeable difference is the absence of Megan Fox, but with lingerie model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley in as her replacement, you probably won't be hearing too many complaints.

There's another difference with this third "Transformers" movie: people are actually liking it, and that includes some critics. "Transformers: Dark of the Moon" is seemingly a little less incomprehensible than the last, and the action is even bigger and better than before. Plus, this might be one movie where 3D is a necessity.

Rottentomatoes has "Transformers 3" at 38% among critics, with a 90% positive audience score.

See it if: You liked the first two "Transformers" movies, or if you like watching s&*^ blow up.

"Larry Crowne"

This interesting little movie was written by, directed by, and stars Tom Hanks, who has been very busy on the production side of the business lately. Hanks stars as the titular Larry Crowne, who goes back to college upon getting laid off from his warehouse job. Julia Roberts co-stars as his teacher/love interest, and a Vespa stars as Crowne's mode of transportation.

The reviews so far have been lukewarm at best, which is not a great sign for a movie that is catering to an older crowd who usually pays attention to things like reviews. In fact, "Transformers" has thus far been slightly better reviewed than "Larry Crowne."

Rottentomatoes has "Larry Crowne" at 35% among critics, with a 58% positive audience score.

See it if: You can't get enough of the Hanx.

"Monte Carlo"

No, it's not about gambling. "Monte Carlo" is the newest Selena Gomez vehicle, serving up the Disney pop star in a feature film much like Hilary Duff was in "The Lizzie McGuire Movie." In fact, there are a lot of similarities between "Monte Carlo" and "The Lizzie McGuire Movie": both take place during a trip to a foreign country after graduation and feature a young girl suddenly getting treated like royalty by a fortunate accident. There are probably songs, too. The only real difference is that this one is set in Paris instead of Rome. Oh, and the star is a brunette.

Rottentomates has "Monte Carlo" at 42% among critics, with an 82% positive audience score.

See it if: You're a Gomez fan, or a Bieber fan who wants to study her every move so you can steal her boyfriend.
