What's in Store for 'New Girl?' Will Nick and Jess Reunite?

Will they or won't they?

"New Girl" characters Nick (Jake Johnson) and Jess (Zooey Deschanel) have certainly had their ups and downs romantically. Season three threw them together as a couple... a show decision that gave many a bad taste in their mouth, despite rooting for them through season one and two.

The two parted ways toward the end of season three, but what does creator and executive producer Liz Meriwether say regarding their future, as season four lurks just around the corner?

First, that Jess will go on a dating spree.

"She dates some real weirdos," Meriwether says. "One of them may or may not have a micro-penis."

That sounds a little more like the "New Girl" we grew to love.

So where did it all go wrong with Nick and Jess? Meriwether blames herself.

"I've never really been in a good relationship," she admits. "It's been easier for me to just write them as single people, single idiots [who are] kind of out in the world trying to get laid and looking for love. It's just been more fun. I had trouble kind of figuring out where the conflict and comedy was coming from in their relationship last season. I think I'm really proud of last season and I think they did an amazing job, but it's definitely fun to kind of keep them apart for a whiile, and we're having a lot of fun writing Jess out dating and getting into jams."

But that doesn't mean she won't give Nick and Jess another go.

"I mean, I love them together and I don't think it's it for them at all," Merimether added.

"New Girl" season 4 premieres Tuesday, September 16th on Fox.
