What's Next for 'Sherlock?'

What's Next for 'Sherlock?' In an interview with Vulture, Steven Moffat, executive producer of the runaway hit series "Sherlock" from PBS, sits down with Denise Martin to discuss the future of the show.

Sunday wrapped up the short-lived season three... therefore, if you haven't yet caught up, you may want to avoid the SPOILERS ahead!

The season finale left us all with more questions than answers. Who is Mary, really? What will happen to Sherlock? Will Moriarty come back to creep us all out again?

And did Mom and Pop Holmes look sort of familiar to anyone else (Sherlock and Mycroft's parentals were played by real-life parents of Benedict Cumberbatch)?

WHEN will we learn the answers?

Unfortunately, not for a while. There was a tragically long gap (two years!) between seasons two and three due to the very busy schedules of stars Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, and it seems likely that we may have to wait just as long for season four.

At least Moffat can throw us a few bones!

On Moriarty: "I can't really say what we're doing with that, but there is no last-minute whim in this. We've had what we're going to do with Moriarty in place from before the second season."

On Sherlock's murdering Magnussen: "People are worried so much about that! Have we forgotten that John shot someone back in episode one? And then had a giggle about it?"

On Mary's shocking revelation: "If Sherlock Holmes hadn't blundered like an incompetent into the room where Mary was going to shoot Magnussen, she'd just have shot him... and they all would have been living happily ever after... unaware the killer was moving around them all the time, just killing anyone who was trying to attack them. Their secret protector."

Finally, what about poor Molly, engagement broken, who was the first to appear in Sherlock's mind palace and has grown into a strong and neccesary character? Will Sherlock and Molly ever be?

Moffat admits "She wasn't even meant to come back after her first appearance, but she worked so well. Louise Brealey was so good... She's become one of a very small select band of people [Sherlock] absolutely trusts. And he adores Molly, of course he does. He loves her. I don't think she has the same crush on him anymore. She's fascinated by him, but she knows that's not who she actually wants to end up with."

"Sherlock" fans, what did you think of the big ending... and what do you deduce is in store for next season?
