Weekend TV July 27-28: 'True Blood' Remains Hot, 'Unforgettable' is Back
by EGHBO's "True Blood" and "The Newsroom" continue to forge ahead into their new seasons this weekend. "True Blood" is still a bright spot for HBO under new show runner Brian Buckner; last week's sixth episode of season 6 handily won the cable ratings race on Sunday night, drawing 4.5 million viewers, perhaps because of the so-hot-it-glows interaction between faerie Sookie and vampire Warlow.
"The Newsroom" hasn't been quite so bright; its season 2 debut was fairly strong ratings wise, falling off just a bit from last season's finale, but the second episode's viewership dropped significantly from the previous week, from 2.2 million viewers to less than 1.9 million. Not only is that a drop of about 14%, it's also far less than half the audience from "The Newsroom"'s lead-in, "True Blood."
If you're a fan of bombastic reality TV, this weekend is your last chance to catch a couple of series before they end their current seasons. The season finale of Discovery's "Naked and Afraid," in which the survival-show genre is invigorated by taking the clothes off the participants' backs, has Billy Berger and Ky Furneaux dodging snakes and gators while not wearing a stitch. On ABC, "Celebrity Wife Swap" continues to redefine the word "celebrity," as one-hit-wonders Gerardo and Sisqo trade wives for awhile.
On CBS, the weekend sees the return of "Unforgettable," the cop thriller that features perhaps TV's only case of dramatic hyperthymesia (which simply means that the show's protagonist, detective Carrie Wells, can remember everything she ever encounters). "Unforgettable" looked dead at the end of its debut season in 2012, but CBS revived it for a new season this summer. This is it, your chance to give the series a second chance.
