Weekend Movie Trailers & Reviews: What's Scarier, 'Cabin in the Woods' or 'Three Stooges?'

Horror meets comedy this weekend as Joss Whedon's new thriller faces off against a remake of an old slapstick comedy at the box office. Which one should you see? Read on for reviews and trailers:

"The Three Stooges"

Rated PG, 1 hr 32 mins.

Based on the classic movies and TV show, this new project from the Farrelly Brothers ("There's Something About Mary," "Dumb and Dumber") reboots Larry, Moe and Curly and sets them in a modern environment. The titular trio is now played by Will Sasso, Sean Hayes and Chris Diamantopoulos, and the movie is supported by an impressive comedic cast that includes Larry David, Jane Lynch and Sofia Vergara.

Thus far, critics have been less than kind to the Stooges, calling the movie "overly juvenile." Rotten Tomatoes has the movie at 45% positive thus far, and the consensus seems to be that while it certainly could have been much worse, there's simly no comparing to the original.

See it if: You want to see Snooki get poked in the eyes (and who doesn't?)

"The Cabin in the Woods"

Rated R, 1 hr 35 mins.

Joss Whedon may have been more sci-fi/comedy oriented, what with TV shows like "Firefly" and "Dollhouse." But don't forget, this is a guy who got his start with "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," so his heart is in horror (albeit with a comedy twist). "The Cabin in the Woods" puts it all together, blending horror with sci-fi (and yes, comedy too) to create the story of a group of teenagers who find themselves the subjects of a horrific experiment in a labrynthian cabin controlled by an unseen villain.

"The Cabin in the Woods" is a hit thus far with critics, with a very impressive 93% on Rotten Tomatoes. Reviews are calling it "astonishing" and praising the meta approach of the movie, which comments on the horror genre as much as it lives it.

See it if: You're a tremendous horror geek, a tremendous Joss Whedon geek, or just a tremendous geek.
