Weekend Movie Trailers and Reviews: Which is Funnier, 'Tower Heist' or 'Harold & Kumar?'

The slate of new releases is a bit short this weekend (although you might want to check out "Like Crazy" in its limited release, if its reception at Sundance is any indication), what with only two major movies coming out in "Tower Heist" and "A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas." But which one should you choose? Check out reviews and trailers to decide:

Tower Heist

Rated PG-13, 99 mins.

This heist farce gets its inspiration from Bernie Madoff, as a group of employees of a real estate magnate decide to rob him after he commits fraud and puts them in the dumps. Supported by an impressive cast including Ben Stiller, Casey Affleck, Eddie Murphy, Alan Alda and Matthew Broderick, the movie plays the humor and also gets you rooting for the underdog. The movie was directed by Brett Ratner, you brought you "Rush Hour" among others, so there's an idea of the tone.

Rotten Tomatoes has "Tower Heist" at 67% among critics, but with a low 71% positive audience reaction. Critics are calling it a "crowd pleaser," both in the sense that it's light and fun and in the sense that it's a little lacking in real substance.

See it if: You need a break from Occupy Wall Street to see one of those 1% jerks actually get their comeuppance.

A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas

Rated R, 89 mins.

The Harold and Kumar saga is back for a third installment, and this time they have a little trick up their sleeves: 3D. You can bet that with the extra-goofy, often sarcastic tone of H&K, the medium will be commented on at almost every turn, both directly through the characters and in having absolutely everything possible fly at your face.

Harold and Kumar are getting older, and they don't see each other much. But when a package ends up on the wrong doorstep, the two are reunited... and accidentally set Harold's christmas tree on fire. That starts them on a mission to find a new christmas tree by morning, and has them running into all kinds of problems, including Neil Patrick Harris.

Rotten Tomatoes has "A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas" at 66% among critics but with a solid 85% audience score. Critics are placing it squarely in between the two previous movies, calling it better than the second but not as good as the first. Still, most are saying that it blends traditional H&K humor with some holiday earnestness in a way that's hard to resist.

See it if: Duuuuuuuuuuuuude.
