Weekend Movie Trailers and Reviews: 'Drive' and 'Straw Dogs' are Violent, but 'The Lion King' Kills in 3D

It's a weekend full of violence at the movie theater, as the body count will rise in "Drive," "Straw Dogs," and even "The Lion King 3D"...okay, maybe not the third one as much, but you know there's some murdering going on in it.

"Drive" - 100 mins., Rated R

Ryan Gosling stars in this action crime thriller from Nicholas Winding Refn, which follows a man who works as a stunt driver by day and getaway driver by night as he becomes entangled in a disagreement with the mob over some missing money. Highly stylized, explosively violent, and moved along by a truly stunning cast (including Carey Mulligan, Bryan Cranston, Albert Brooks and Christina Hendricks), "Drive" is an interesting little film that will please action junkies and film afficionados alike.

Rotten Tomatoes has "Drive" at a stellar 95% among critics with an 89% positive audience reaction. Though there are some action movie cliches in there, the style and arthouse feel to the film, as well as the performances, render them negligible.

See it if: You've always wanted to see Gosling drop the "Notebook" crap and just bash some skulls in. Literally.

"Straw Dogs" - 109 mins., Rated R

This remake takes the original story of a pacifist and Vietnam draft dodger whose wife is assaulted and home is invaded and changes it slightly: instead of being in England, it's set in the American South. But much of the nuance and detail of the original is lost in this remake: pacifism doesn't seem quite as important to our leading man (James Marsden) and the relationship between his wife (Kate Bosworth) and her ex (Alexander Skarsgard) isn't quite as complicated.

Regardless, the major points are still there: "True Blood" star Skarsgard and his goons get more and more agressive until Marsden finall gets agressive back at them, resulting in a horrifying bloodbath that brings "Hostel" to mind in its revenge-porn-ness.

Rotten Tomatoes has "Straw Dogs" at just 36% with a low 60% positive audience reaction. There's a lack of real reflection on the subject of violence here, and what is left is simply killing for the sake of entertainment enclosed within a surprisingly generic movie.

See it if: You probably don't want to see him like this, but if you're a "True Blood" junkie, there's always Alexander Skarsgard...

"The Lion King 3D" - 87 mins., Rated G

One of Disney's greatest animated films is back, and now it's in 3D! "The Lion King" has been completely converted to 3D, and when you see it in action it really lends itself to the medium well: the movie already played with depth of field in a way that most animated movies had never dreamed of, so the addition of 3D only makes it stronger. Just think about that wildebeest stampede for a second. It'd look pretty cool in 3D, right?

Rotten Tomatoes has "The Lion King" at 89% with an 89% positive audience reaction. It remains a classic of Disney's library, and the addition of 3D gives it an extra twist that makes it worth heading to theaters to see.

See it if: You want a little nostalgia kick this weekend.
