Weekend (2/3) Movie Trailers and Reviews: 'Chronicle' Is Better Than You Think
by Andy NeuenschwanderCould it be? Are we actually looking at a post-awards season weekend in which all three movies are getting positive reviews? Believe it, folks: as of today, the three big new releases of the weekend are all good ones, worth your dollar if you're a fan of their genres. Here they are:
"Chronicle"
Rated PG-13, 83 mins.
Take a little bit of "Batman Begins," sprinkle in some "Hancock" and "Kick-Ass," and top it with "Cloverfield," and you have the weekend's best-reviewed movie, "Chronicle." This is yet another found-footage movie, like "Cloverfield" or "Paranormal Activity," but instead of the horror genre, this is a superhero movie.
The story follows three teenagers who begin to develop superpowers: flight, super strength, telekinesis, the works. As they grow stronger, it becomes clear that one of them is not content to play by the rules, and the remaining two must confront their now-evil friend.
Rotten Tomatoes has "Chronicle" at a surprising 85% among critics with equally positive reactions from audiences. Though this movie relies on the same found-footage style that will grow tiresome by year's end, it's a fresh and engaging story that is well written and acted.
See it if: You've ever wished you could fly, or throw a bus at your annoying friend.
"The Woman in Black"
Rated PG-13, 94 mins.
Daniel Radcliffe returns to the big screen in his first major motion picture since "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2." His role is much different this time: Radcliffe plays a young lawyer who encounters the vengeful spirit of a scorned woman in this very creepy ghost story.
Rotten Tomatoes has "The Woman in Black" at a decent 62%, making it fresh for the time being. This is an old-school horror flick, one that aims to scare psychologically rather than going for gore... however, the scares might not be scary enough for true horror afficionados.
See it if: You want to see Harry Potter out of Hogwarts.
"Big Miracle"
Rated PG, 106 mins.
There's a bit more to "Big Miracle" than just the animals. While the movie focuses mainly on the rescue of trapped whales in the Arctic circle, the story also includes a bit of human drama as two rival countries must work together to save said whales. It's based on a true story, though there may be a lot of liberties taken here.
The movie stars Jon Krasinski of "The Office" and ardent animal activists Kristen Bell and Drew Barrymore. Fully expect Fox News to rail on this one for its "liberal agenda."
Rotten Tomatoes has "Big Miracle" at a solid 71% among critics. It will be sappy, it will be aimed at families of all ages, but if that's what you're looking for, you'll be satisfied with this one.
See it if: Awwww, whales!
