Weekend Movie Trailers and Reviews: Barbarians, Vampires and Anne Hathaway

Summer is winding down, and the big-budget actioners are on their way out. But this weekend's theatrical lineup still has some action lined up, as well as some horror and romance. Oh, and there's "Spy Kids 4" with Aroma-Scope, but I wouldn't recommend getting involved with that.

"Conan the Barbarian"

Technically it's a comic book movie, but "Conan the Barbarian" doesn't seem to fit in with the superhero glamor of the summer. Conan is a different kind of hero, a sword-swinging muscle man whose superpower is knowing how to kill entire armies of opponents in rather gruesome fashion.

Jason Momoa of "Game of Thrones" stars in the titular role, and is receiving positive comments from most critics for his performance. If anything, it's a heck of a lot better than the acting of Arnold Schwarzenegger, who took the role in the 1982 version of the movie.

Rotten Tomatoes has "Conan the Barbarian" at 25% among critics. Many are citing a lack of actual excitement despite all the gore, as well as a thin plot.

See it if: You want to see Khal Drogo kick some ass (you won't be seeing it anywhere else, I guess...)

"Fright Night"

When it was announced that the 1985 classic camp horror film "Fright Night" would be remade, those who knew of the original deemed it a big waste of time. Why remake a movie that was enjoyable the first time, albeit a bit silly? But the adaptation went ahead, and now Colin Farrell and Anton Yelchin star in a story that focuses on a high school senior who discovers his neighbor is a vampire. And he's not a sparkly "Twilight" vampire, either.

"Fright Night" will now lead the charge of 80's movies that are being remade for modern audiences, including "Dirty Dancing," "Red Dawn" and "Footloose."

Rotten Tomatoes has "Fright Night" at a solid 78% among critics. The movie delivers clever comedy and some gory horror fun to boot.

See it if: You're tired of those vegetarian vampires.

"One Day"

If all the gore involved with sword-swinging barbarians and bloodthirsty vampires isn't your thing, then Anne Hathaway is here to rescue you from the horrible beasts. Hathaway stars in "One Day," a romantic comedy about a pair of friends who meet the day they graduate from college and develop a friendship over the next 20 years. We follow their relationship by witnessing the events of just one day each year: the anniversary of the day that they met.

Hathaway is joined by Jim Sturgess, who starred as Jude in the Beatles musical "Across the Universe." Patricia Clarkson also turns in a great performance.

Rotten Tomatoes has "One Day" at only 29% among critics. While the cast is very strong, the relationship is thinner here than it was in the book the movie is based on, and never quite draws you in. Still, there are moments that rom-com fans will enjoy.

See it if: You have a package of kleenex that needs to be used.
