Weekend Movie Trailers and Reviews: Is 'Act of Valor' Just an Act?

Two very different movies hit theaters this weekend: one is a comedy about hippies, the other is a military movie starring real active-duty Navy SEALs. But which one, if either, is worth going to the theater to see?

"Act of Valor"

Rated R, 101 mins.

What originally started as a recruitment video has become a full-on, feature-length movie... that's still kind of a recruitment video. "Act of Valor" follows a team of Navy SEALs who discover a potentially disastrous threat and must set out to stop it. The movie stars real, active-duty Navy SEALs and true-to-life tactics and technology, resulting in detailed action set pieces. It's a bit like "Call of Duty" on the movie screen.

The reviews for "Act of Valor" are mixed thus far, with only a 25% on Rotten Tomatoes. As you might expect, the action can be thrilling but the story leaves a lot to be desired. Stock characters and oversimplified morals leave little room for nuance.

See it if: You want "Call of Duty" without all that pesky button-pushing.

"Wanderlust"

Rated R, 98 mins.

Brought to you by the same folks who created "Wet Hot American Summer" and "Children's Hospital" (David Wain and Ken Marino), this new comedy stars Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston as a stressed-out city couple who stumbles upon a hippie commune. The majority of the movie is spent watching Rudd and Aniston's characters adjust (or attempt to adjust) to the free-spirited ways of the residents.

Reviews for "Wanderlust" are more or less split down the middle, with the current tally at 56% positive. A slightly higher 68% of audience members enjoyed the film. Chances are pretty good that if you like Wain's other work, you'll have a good time with this one.

See it if: You can quote every line from "Wet Hot."
