Weekend Box Office: Zootopia Conquers All
by EG
Zootopia, the new family-friendly film from Disney Animation Studios, raced past the R-rated Deadpool to take the top spot at the box office last weeked. There was no surprise in that result, but slightly more surprising was the fact that another new release, the action film London Has Fallen, also outpaced Deadpool to take the number two spot.
Zootopia was expected to easily win the weekend, but it outperformed even the optimistic expectations, taking in $73.7 million. That's a bigger opening than the first weekend turned in by Disney's last animated monster hit, Frozen, and it's the fourth biggest March opening of any film.
London Has Fallen was in a distant second place, earning $21.7 million. Its predecessor, Olympus Has Fallen, did better with $30.4 million in its opening weekend, and London Has Fallen's performance is somewhat disappointing in that regard.
Deadpool managed to hang on to take the third-place spot with $16.4 million. The raunchy superhero movie had taken the number one spot for three weekends in a row prior to this one and to this point has earned $311 million domestically.
The week's final new wide release, Tina Fey's comedy Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, was the biggest disappointment among the new offerings. With just $7.6 million in ticket sales, it edged into the top five at number four, just ahead of last week's big-budget bomb, Gods of Egypt, which took in a measly $5 million this weekend.
