Weekend Box Office: Wins for Captain America and Mother's Day
by EG
Captain America: Civil War didn't live up to the most optimistic predictions for its domestic opening weekend, but the new Avengers movie did well enough to rank with the biggest of all Disney's Marvel movie openings. No other new movies competed this week, but one hold-over did surprisingly well in its second weekend of release.
Civil War is on track to take in about $182 million for the weekend. That's the fifth biggest opening of any film ever, and its the third biggest Marvel movie opening, falling behind only The Avengers and Avengers: Age of Ultron. It's also significantly bigger than the previous top two openings of the year: Deadpool, which took in $132 million in its opening weekend, and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, which earned $166 million in its first weekend.
Civil War fell well short of $200 million, however, and that was a milestone that some observers thought the film had a chance of passing.
Second place for the weekend goes to The Jungle Book, but the real surprise is in third place, where Mother's Day landed in its second weekend. The ensemble comedy earned just $8.4 million in its first weekend and came in fourth place, but this week, the coincidence of the movie and the actual Mother's Day holiday gave the movie a boost. It took in $9 million for the weekend and easily outpaced hold-overs The Huntsman Winter's War and Keanu.
