Weekend Box Office: 'Warm Bodies' Takes a Bite Out of Your Wallet

The Super Bowl was this weekend, and, traditionally, that makes it one of the slowest weekends of the year. However, “Warm Bodies” managed to draw in the crowds anyway.

While total profits were down 27% from Super Bowl weekend last year, the trendy supernatural romance (combining America’s love of zombies with the world’s love of forbidden romance) managed to gross a hefty sum of $20.35 million. This makes it the seventh highest opening on a Super Bowl weekend.

So far, the movie seems to be scoring well, averaging a 77% at Rotten Tomatoes, and it is drawing in the teenage female demographic, as expected. (One of our editors has gone to see the film; you can read Shannon's review of it here.)

In second place, “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” fell by 52%, landing at $9.4 million. It seems the poor reviews (16%, according to Rotten Tomatoes) have gotten out. The movie seems to be at war with itself, not sure which genre it wants to fall in to, and thus fails to fall into any.

In third place is the Oscar-nominated “Silver Linings Playbook”, earning a reasonable $7.7 million, which is an 18% drop. This movie is fast approaching the $100 million milestone, which is to be expected, given the 92% at Rotten Tomatoes.

Mama”, at fourth place, fell 50%, earning $6.6 million. The film has mixed reviews, averaging to a 62% at Rotten Tomatoes, but it’s gross earnings of $58.1 million make it the top horror movie since “Paranormal Activity 3”.

And rounding out the top five is “Zero Dark Thirty”, which fell 46% to earn $5.2 million. This drama follows the hunt for Osama bin Laden, and has critics delighted, earning a 94% at Rotten Tomatoes.
