Weekend Box Office: War Room Wins the Battle

After a strong opening weekend last week, the Christian drama War Room drew nearly as many viewers this weekend, holding off Straight Outta Compton and preventing the NWA bio pic from leading the box office for a fourth week in a row.

War Room's take for the long holiday weekend fell off by less than 20 percent compared to last weekend, and its three-day take for the weekend should turn out to be about $9.4 million. That's ahead of Compton, which will likely take in about $8.9 million.

As we predicted, the Robert Redford adventure comedy A Walk in the Woods turned out to be a positive surprise. The film, which was aimed primarily at older audiences, stood to take in about $8.4 million for the weekend, enough to put it in third place and not too far off of second place.

Fourth place went to holdover Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation, and fifth place was taken, in disappointing fashion, by the week's second new release, The Transporter Refueled. Going into the weekend, the action thriller was expected to outpace A Walk in the Woods, but its ticket sales fell off considerably as the weekend progressed. In the end, The Transporter is expected to earn about $7.1 million.
