Weekend Box Office: 'Tomorrowland' Is Already Yesterday's News
by Andy Neuenschwander
Strange things are happening at the box office: small musical comedies are out-pacing big action flicks and Disney is putting out flops despite having George Clooney as a lead.
Disney's "Tomorrowland" was the big opener of the Memorial Day weekend, aiming to be a four-quadrant film that would welcome families enjoying a movie over their three-day weekend. Instead, "Tomorrowland" had a four-day total of $41.7 million, one of the lowest Memorial Day openings for a major studio tentpole of all time. The movie didn't fare much better overseas, and with a number of unkind reviews from critics, the future doesn't look bright for "Tomorrowland."
On the other end of the box office spectrum, "Pitch Perfect 2" continues to amaze with a second-weekend haul of $38.5 million, nearly matching "Tomorrowland" despite having already been out a week. The total for the musical comedy is now $126 million, with international revenue putting it just under the $200 million mark.
While it didn't perform as well as "Pitch Perfect 2" domestically in their opening weekend, "Mad Max: Fury Road" nonetheless had an impressive holdover in its second week, dropping a relatively small percentage to $32.1 million. "Fury Road" has enjoyed some success overseas as well, bringing its total to $219.8 million globally.
The second major opener for the weekend was the remake of the classic horror film "Poltergeist," which brought in $22.6 million from a largely young audience for a fourth-place finish. Rounding out the top five was "Avengers: Age of Ultron" which had a strong week 4 haul of $21.7 million and has now made $1.263 billion globally.
Here are the top five for the week, with domestic cumulative totals:
1. "Tomorrowland" - $41.7 million
2. "Pitch Perfect 2" - $38.5 million ($109.5M)
3. "Mad Max: Fury Road" - $32.1 million ($88.2M)
4. "Poltergeist" - $22.6 million
5. "Avengers: Age of Ultron" - $21.7 million ($404.8M)
