Weekend Box Office: There Were Non-Star Wars Movies Playing, Too
by EG
This past weekend at the box office was, of course, totally dominated by Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. There were, however, other movies in theaters at the same time, and they didn't so badly, either, making the weekend the biggest in terms of gross ticket sales of all time.
No movie had any chance of coming close to Star Wars. The film set records for biggest one-day earnings, biggest December opening and biggest opening weekend of all time, among others. By the end of the weekend, the film's total domestic take sat at $248 million, a full $40 million more than Jurassic World, the previous record holder.
Second went to new release Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip, which pulled in $14.3 million. That wasn't too bad, but it was the lowest opening for any movie in the Alvin franchise.
In third place was another new release, the Tina Fey/Amy Poehler comedy Sisters, which took in $14 million. Holdovers The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 2 and Creed came in fourth and fifth, with $5.9 and $5 million, respectively.
