Weekend Box Office: 'Ted 2' Suffers Against 'Inside Out,' 'Jurassic World'

Seth MacFarlane is having some rather bad luck at the box office.

The "Family Guy" creator suffered a terrible flop last year with "A Million Ways to Die in the West," but looked to turn it around this year with "Ted 2," the follow-up to the surprisingly successful "Ted."

However, the sequel not only failed to pass the original "Ted" in box office earnings, it also fell well short. "Ted 2" brought in $32.9 million, almost $20 million less than the original "Ted," putting it in third place in its opening weekend.

R-rated comedies have been suffering in general (even the well-reviewed "Spy" didn't earn much at the box office), but "Ted 2" had the extra challenge of going up against the behemoths of "Jurassic World" and "Inside Out." Each earned more than $50 million over the weekend despite being holdovers. "Jurassic World" also passed a major milestone in the domestic box office, earning a total of $500 million over just three weeks.

In fourth place was the heartstring-tugging "Max," the story of a military dog adopted by a KIA soldier's younger brother back home. The movie appealed early to those in the 4th of July spirit, earning a modest $12.2 million.

That left fifth place to the aforementioned "Spy," which earned another $7.8 million for a total of $88.3 million domestically thus far.

Here are the top five from the week, with cumulative totals:

1. "Jurassic World" - $54.2M ($500M)

2. "Inside Out" - $52.1M ($184.9M)

3. "Ted 2" - $32.9M

4. "Max" - $12.2M

5. "Spy" - $7.8M ($88.3M)
