Weekend Box Office: 'Star Trek: Into Darkness' Kicks 'Iron Man 3' Out of Top Position
by Shannon KeirnanThe numbers suggest it was probably “Star Trek: Into Darkness.” The film, which stars Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, pulled in $70.5 million for its opening weekend, kicking “Iron Man 3” out of the top spot and into second.
It was, however, not as financially successful as its predecessor, which brought in $5 million more total when it hit theaters four years ago.
“Iron Man 3,” descending to second, is still pulling in heavy money with $35 million. That brings the flick to $337.1 million domestically, and $736.2 million overseas.
Baz Lurhmann’s take on a classic, “The Great Gatsby,” meanwhile, comes in third with $23.4 million. The film, based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s novel, is on screens in both 2- and 3-D, and has taken in around $90 million since its opening.
Mark Wahlberg’s “Pain and Gain” pulled in $3.1 million for a spot in fourth place, and in fifth, animated “The Croods” continues to keep a spot in the top ten. The family-friendly picture brought in $2.75.
The bottom five are composed of movies that probably ought to be doing a little better, like the Jackie Robinson biopic “42” in sixth with $2.73, and Tom Cruise’s “Oblivion” in seventh with $2.2. Did the opening of “Star Trek” and “Iron Man” crush their chances to rise?
In eighth is the Reese Witherspoon flick “Mud” with $2.1, and newly released Tyler Perry film “Peeples” has only managed to take in $2.15 million.
Last place is held by critic-hated “The Big Wedding,” with just $1.1 million for the weekend.
