Weekend Box Office: Spectre and Peanuts Remain on Top
by EG
The fate of last weekend's new movies was slightly better than that of the new releases of recent weeks, but the top movies at the box office over the weekend were still holdovers from the previous week.
The top movie for the weekend was Spectre, which took the top spot for the second weekend in a row. The latest installment in the James Bond franchise took in another $35 million, bringing its total US gross to $130.7 million so far. The movie is doing even better in international markets, and its world-wide gross to date is more than a half billion dollars.
The Peanuts Movie came in second for the second weekend in a row with gross earnings of $24 million.
Love the Coopers, a Christmas-themed comedy in its first weekend of release, came in third with $8.4 million, which was right in line with expectations. The 33, a drama about a Chilean mine disaster, came in fifth with earnings of $5.8; its fifth-place finish was a bit better than observers had predicted. Between the two newcomers in fourth place was The Martian, which is still going strong after seven weeks in theaters.
The week's final new release, the faith-based drama My All-American, finished in twelfth place with a disappointing $1.3 million.
