Weekend Box Office: 'Rogue One' and 'Hidden Figures' Tie for First
by EG
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story might have given up the top spot at the box office this week, but only barely. The historical drama Hidden Figures performed well as it expanded into wide release, and early Sunday it looked as if it was going to end the weekend in a virtual tie with Rogue One. When final figures come out at the beginning of the week, there's a good chance that Hidden Figures will have squeaked into first place.
Both of the films earned about $22 million over the weekend, and Rogue One was looking to defend the top spot, which it had held for the previous three weeks. Hidden Figures is benefitting from good word of mouth, excellent reviews and Oscar buzz.
Third place went to the animated Sing. It finished the weekend with about $19 million, just a touch behind the top two. In fourth place was Underworld: Blood Wars, the fantasy/horror sequel that brought in a disappointing $13 million.
Finally making its way into the top five was La La Land with $10 million. The musical romance had been performing extremely well in limited release, and this weekend it double its theater count - although it was still playing in less than half as many theaters as the wide releases at the top of the charts.
