Weekend Box Office: Party Time for Sausages
by EG
The R-rated comedy Sausage Party isn't the number-one movie of the week, but it's rustled up enough ticket sales to come in a strong second. First place for the week goes to last week's top movie, Suicide Squad, which saw a massive drop-off in ticket sales from last week's record-breaking pace.
Sausage Party will pull in an estimated $33 million for the weekend. That would be a modest number for a big summer blockbuster, but it's ahead of expectations for the relatively low-budget animated film, and it's a good opening for an R-rated movie of any kind. It's on a par with the opening weekend of last year's Ted 2, the sequel to the hit comedy about a foul-mouthe stuffed bear. That film went on to earn about $81 million.
Suicide Squad stumbled this week, its ticket sales falling about 67 percent compared to last week. That's a drop comparable to that experienced by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. That makes both films look like disappointments when compared to other superhero tentpoles, but it's hard to argue with their overall performance. Suicide Squad's take this week boosts its overall worldwide gross to nearly a half billion dollars.
This week's big loser was Pete's Dragon, a rare miss for Disney. The animated/live action family film took in only an estimated $21 million and settled into third place.
