Weekend Box Office: 'Oz' Gets Clubbed by 'The Croods'
by Shannon KeirnanNew films hitting theaters this weekend finally kicked “Oz: The Great and Powerful” out of its top position in the box office, dropping the “Wizard of Oz” prequel to number three on this weekend’s top ten.
Animated “The Croods,” which features voice work from Emma Stone, Nicolas Cage, Ryan Reynolds and Catherine Keener, booted “Oz” out of the number one spot where it has been sitting comfortably since its release.
“The Croods” brought in a lovely $44.7 million this weekend, putting it in a far lead over number two, “Olympus Has Fallen.” The action thriller starring Gerard Butler, Aaron Eckhart and Morgan Freeman, opened with $30.5 million—significantly more than the $20 million anticipated.
Number three, "Oz the Great and Powerful," still pulled strong with $22 million for the weekend. It's good news that the James Franco and Mila Kunis fantasy is staying in the lead, as a sequel is already in the works.
Halle Berry’s "The Call" continues to do better than expected, with $8.7 million for the weekend.
At number five and just $6.4 million, "Admission” has proved a box office disappointment, despite featuring the talents of Tina Fey and Paul Rudd.
At six, "Spring Breakers," with $5 million, continues to do better than anticipated. After its limited release went well, the Selena Gomez action flick will open in more theaters than originally planned.
At seven, "The Incredible Burt Wonderstone," brought in a lousy $4.3 million. At eight, "Jack the Giant Slayer," still brought in audiences with $3 million for the weekend, as well as the long-running "Identity Thief" with $2.5 million.
"Snitch" took the final slot at $1.9 million.
