Weekend Box Office: 'Neighbors' Outduels 'Spider-Man'
by EGIf “The Amazing Spider-Man 2” was hoping to establish itself as the summer’s superhero movie to beat, it got a little unexpected bad news last weekend. Going into its second week of release, “Spider-Man” got a sound thrashing from “Neighbors,” a raunchy comedy starring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron.
“Spider-Man” had enjoyed a successful opening weekend, but its ticket sales fell off sharply in its second weekend; after opening to $92 million in ticket sales, it took in just $35 million in weekend number two. “Neighbors,” on the other hand, took in $49 million in its opening weekend, an impressive number for a comedy and enough to take first place for the week.
“The Other Woman” trailed far behind in third place, with $9.6 million, easily beating the week’s new woman-focused comedy, “Moms’ Night Out.” The Patricia Heaton vehicle took in only $4.3 million and placed seventh. The film hoped to capitalize on the recent success of Christian-themed films, but it didn’t live up to expectations; Christian melodrama “Heaven Is for Real” took in $7.5 million in its fourth week and placed fourth, suggesting that Christian comedies don’t draw as well as Christian tear jerkers.
The week’s other new wide release, the animated “Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return,” was an even bigger disappointment; it took in just $3.7 million and placed eighth.
