Weekend Box Office: More 'Thor' While 'Bridesmaids' Plays Second Fiddle

It's hard to de-throne a superhero flick when you're an R-rated comedy, but "Bridesmaids" tried its hardest this weekend.

Still, "Thor" placed first in box office grosses once again, pulling in $34.5 million. That's a drop of less than 50%, which is much better than the drop of 62% that "Fast Five" experienced in its second weekend. So, there's a testament to how good reviews can help a movie out.

The weekend brings "Thor" revenues up to $119.3 million domestically, with estimates at about $344 million worldwide.

The aforementioned "Bridesmaids" was a surprising cash cow, pulling in $24.6 million. That was more than expected, and an impressive opening for a gender-specific R-rated comedy (though the advertisements worked to emphasize that Judd Apatow produced, attempting to draw in men).

"Bridesmaids" had a budget of $32.5 million, so this opening puts it well on its way to being a high-profit project. Considering the strong opening, the movie has a good chance of becoming a sleeper hit in the vein of "The 40-Year-Old Virgin."

"Fast Five" came in third in its third weekend, dropping only about 40% to settle at an estimated $19.5 million. The worldwide cumulative total for the movie is now a whopping $440 million, making this an excellent weekend indeed for Universal (who also released "Bridesmaids."

Another new opener, "Priest," placed fourth with $14.6 million, a number in line with what was expected. Though "Priest" is a special-effects-laden action flick (in 3D, which boosts ticket prices), it's a dark movie and one based on a comic book that few have read, which limits the audience mostly to young males.

In fifth place was "Rio," which continues to hang on and make respectable money every week. The weekend total was around $8 million, bringing its domestic total to almost $125 million.
