Weekend Box Office: 'Moana' Wins, 'Incarnate' Goes Unnoticed

After doing more than $80 million in business over the long holiday weekend last week, Disney's Moana had more modest success this weekend. Modesty aside, Moana was still able to take the week's top spot, while the week's only new wide release, the horror film Incarnate, barely made it into the top ten.

Moana took in about $28 million for the weekend, staying well ahead of the Harry Potter prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, which earned $18.5 million.

Those two films were by far the most successful of the weekend. Hold-overs Arrival and Allied took third and fourth places, respectively, with gross earnings of about $7 million each. Fifth place went to Marvel's Doctor Strange, which fell off considerably to take in about $6.5 million.

Demon-possession flick Incarnate wasn't expected to have a big weekend, and it didn't. It took in about $2.7 million, falling behind elderly hold-overs Trolls and Hacksaw Ridge and the underperforming Bad Santa 2. According to early estimates, it looks like Incarnate will edge out holiday comedy Almost Christmas to take ninth place for the week.

Next week is set to be another quiet one at the box office, with two new low-profile wide releases. Things will pick up again on December 16, when Rogue One: A Star Wars Story hits theaters.
