Weekend Box Office: 'Magic Mike' and 'Ted' Make the Big Bucks

This weekend was supposed to be a relatively quiet one at the box office, a holdover until "The Amazing Spider-Man" hits over the Independence Day weekend. But the weekend's two big openers had other ideas, overperforming and bringing in some big bucks.

"Ted" took the top spot, as the raunchy comedy from "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane brought in an impressive $52.5 million. That's much more than expected, as the movie was bolstered by a strong Friday and a good few million in midnight showings. Perhaps the draw of the high-concept premise plus the built-in "Family Guy" fan base helped the R-rated comedy perform.

"Magic Mike" was also impressive, bringing in about $38 million estimated over the weekend. While it's fairly obvious why "Magic Mike" would perform well with certain demographics, strong reviews from critics may have helped as well. It will be interesting to see how the dancing dramedy performs going forward.

Disney/Pixar's "Brave" took third place with about $35.5 million in its second weekend. That's a drop of less than 50%, and puts the movie at a very healthy $132.2 million domestic cume over two weeks.

"Brave" was followed by the third new opener of the weekend, "Madea's Witness Protection." Yes, they're still making Madea movies, and yes, they're still doing relatively well: the latest one brought in $27 million over the weekend.

Fifth place went to the animated "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" with $12.5 million in its fourth weekend. That puts its cume at about $180.7 million thus far, making it a sure bet to pass $200 million fairly soon.

Despite the strong performances of "Magic Mike" and "Ted," both will likely see a big dip next weekend as "The Amazing Spider-Man" swings into theaters and aims to dethrone "The Avengers" as the top opener of all time.
