If there were any concerns that audiences were "over" dinosaur movies, they're gone now.
"Jurassic World," the franchise reboot of the 1994 classic "Jurassic Park," opened to a massive $204.6 million over the weekend, far exceeding any expectations of the film...especially considering the performances of previous sequels in the franchise.
That $204.6 million domestic gives "Jurassic World" the #2 opening weekend of all time, second only to 2012's "The Avengers," which opened with $207.4 million. However, "Jurassic World" did have the single best Friday haul of all time.
Even better for Universal, "Jurassic World" earned a whopping $511.8 million globally thanks to big performances in foreign markets, with China alone contributing $100.8 million.
There were no other major openers this weekend, with none daring to take on the gargantuan dinosaur flick, so holdover "Spy" took second place with $16 million. In third was disaster movie "San Andreas" with $11 million, putting it over the $100M mark domestically.
The third "Insidious" movie took fourth place with a modest $7.3 million in its second week, with "Pitch Perfect 2" rounding out the top five with another $5.9 million.
Here are the top five movies of the week, with domestic cumulative totals:
