Weekend Box Office: 'Jason Bourne' Wallops 'Star Trek Beyond'
by EG
The weekend's top movie, the thriller Jason Bourne, came in near the high end of projections to take the top spot, while last week's number one, Star Trek Beyond, dropped off precipitously from its ticket sales last week, subjecting itself to a tight battle for second place with the new comedy Bad Moms.
Jason Bourne performed well through the weekend, taking in about $60 million. That's ahead of some predictions but within the range of the most generous projections. It's also well behind the $69.2 million that Matt Damon's last Bourne film, 2007's The Bourne Ultimatum, earned in its opening weekend.
Star Trek Beyond fell off by nearly 60% this week, taking in only about $24 million, as compared to last week's $59 million. Early in the weekend, it looked like newcomer Bad Moms would easily overtake Star Trek for second place, but the comedy lost momentum later in the weekend; now it looks like the race between the two films might be extremely tight.
The week's other new film, the thriller Nerve, is doing better than expected, and its take for the weekend could push $15 million, well above most predictions. That could be enough for the film to elbow its way into the top five.
