Weekend Box Office Jan. 3-5: 'Frozen' Leads, 'Paranormal Activity' Follows

There was no better movie to suit the state of the nation this weekend, and "Frozen" took advantage of the wintry vibe to take first place at the box office, ahead of the week's only new wide release.

"Frozen" took in $20.7 million over the weekend, its sixth since debuting in wide release on Nov. 27. Although "Frozen" hasn't held the top spot since the weekend of Dec. 6, it's stayed with "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" near the top every week since.

The week's only new movie, "Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones," took the second-place spot with $18.2 million. That's a respectable figure considering the film's small production budget, but it's by far the lowest opening weekend take of any movie in the "Paranormal Activity" franchise.

"The Hobbit" persevered, taking third place. "The Wolf of Wall Street" and "American Hustle" wrestled over fourth place, and "Anchorman 2," "Saving Mr. Banks" and "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" cleaned up the sixth- through eighth-place spots. The last two places in the top ten went to "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire" and "Grudge Match."

In Justin Bieber news, "Believe" took in $573,000 over the weekend. It's now made back its production budget. However, it still needs about $4 million more to make back its modest promotion budget.
