Weekend Box Office: 'Jack the Giant Slayer' Slays It!

Fee Fie Foe Fum! I smell the makings of a number one movie.

Despite the box office taking a major hit (probably a sign of the times), “Jack the Giant Slayer” opened strong this week with a nice $27.2 million. That number could have been much higher, but it seems the marketing team for this movie was slacking. Trailers didn’t begin to appear until it was far too late.

“Jack the Giant Slayer” (starring recent box office hit Nicholas Hoult from “Warm Bodies”) has earned a very mixed 52% at Rotten Tomatoes. The tale recounts the ancient war between the giants and the humans that Jack inadvertently starts again. (Way to go, Jack).

In second place, “Identity Thief” holds strong, dropping only 31% to bring in $9.7 million. The movie, so far, has grossed over $100 million, making it the top grossing comedy of the year so far, and one of Seth Gordon’s highest rankers.

In third place was newcomer “21 and Over”, bringing in a pitiful $8.8 million.

While it is an obvious “The Hangover” wannabe (which makes sense, since it was written by the writers of “The Hangover”), it seems the audiences weren’t too impressed, gaining a 29% approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes. I guess there is a limit to drunken shenanigans that people will pay to see.

In fourth is The Rock’s “Snitch”, falling 41% to earn $7.8 million.

And in fifth, newcomer “The Last Exorcism Part II” has bombed with $7.7 million. This movie has managed to earn an 11% approval rating at Rotten Tomatoes, but can anyone really be surprised? Especially with a contradictory title such as “Last Exorcism” and “Part II”.

  1. “Jack the Giant Slayer” – $27.2 million
  2. “Identity Thief” – $9.7 million ($107.4 million)
  3. “21 and Over” – $8.8 million
  4. “Snitch” – $7.8 million ($24.5 million)
  5. “The Last Exorcism Part II” – $7.7 million
